FYI Assignments
FYI (follow your interest) assignments are meant to engage you further in something you’ve learned. I will ask for four of these each quarter. I want you to pick a topic that interests you from our lessons and study it further. You make the decision, you follow it up, and you let your curiosity by your guide.
Ask a question. An example might be if we talk about Theodore Roosevelt, and I mention that he was a conservationist. Maybe you spend 5-10 minutes finding out what you can about this subject.
What do you turn in? Your question – i.e.: Why was Theodore Roosevelt a conservationist? Then, type what you’ve found. A list of facts or two or three sentences will be acceptable. These are 5-minute assignments and must be typed.
Sources – you must tell me what sources you used to find out your answers. Type them at the bottom of the page. You do not have to use full bibliography form – I am okay with you “copy pasting” it from the URL.
How much does it count? The four FYI’s will be one quiz grade.
My hope is that you will have no trouble finding something that you want to know more about as we talk about each piece of history. I expect you to put thought into these questions. I will not give you credit for thoughtless FYI questions or answers - quality counts – always!
What kinds of sources can I use?
I want to see good sources. We will talk about what that means. In this case, I will allow Wikipedia.
Due dates will be announced each quarter. Typically they are due one week before the end of the quarter, but if we're really in the middle of something, I may make them earlier or later. You are welcome to turn them one at a time throughout the quarter. A lot of students like to write their questions as they come to them so when they sit down to do the assignment they can remember what they wanted to do.
